Navi Pillay receives the Nobel Peace Prize for her legacy in human rights

The World Jurist Association and the World Law Foundation extend their most sincere congratulations to Navi Pillay on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, a global recognition that celebrates a lifetime spent at the forefront of international jurisprudence, fundamental freedoms, and the Rule of Law.

Navi Pillay’s career is marked by extraordinary historical breakthroughs. In 1995, she was nominated by President Nelson Mandela as the first black female judge to serve on the High Court of South Africa. Her judicial leadership subsequently reached the international stage, where she served as Judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

Recognizing her profound impact on global justice, the World Jurist Association previously honored her with the WJA Ruth Bader Ginsburg Medal of Honor in 2021, which she received in person in 2023 at the World Law Foundation’s Rule of Law Digital Center. This distinction was awarded in recognition of her groundbreaking legal jurisprudence, particularly her role in establishing the landmark precedent that defined sexual violence and gender-based crimes as acts of genocide under international law, as well as her steadfast defense of judicial independence, equal rights, and the protection of vulnerable populations.

Receiving the Nobel Peace Prize serves as a powerful testament to her enduring impact on global justice and human rights.
