WJA President meets Berlin’s Governing Mayor to advance the city’s candidacy for the World Law Congress 2029

In July 2026, Javier Cremades, President of the World Jurist Association (WJA), met in Berlin with the Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, to advance preparations for the city’s candidacy to host the World Law Congress in 2029.

The date carries special meaning for the global legal community, as 2029 will mark both the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 80th anniversary of Germany’s Basic Law (Grundgesetz), the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Germany is one of the great references of modern constitutionalism, a country that rebuilt its democratic institutions around the principle of human dignity and placed individual rights at the heart of the constitutional state. That legacy of democratic renewal and European unity makes Berlin an ideal setting for international legal dialogue.

A World Law Congress in Berlin in 2029 would bring together world leaders, judges, jurists and scholars to address today’s challenges to judicial independence, constitutional order and fundamental freedoms. By meeting in Berlin for these anniversaries, the WJA seeks to reaffirm that strong legal frameworks and the protection of human dignity remain the surest safeguards of peace and democratic stability.
