STATEMENT OF THE WJA

ON THE AGGRESSION OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION AGAINST THE STATE AND PEOPLE OF UKRAINE

1) The World Jurist Association (WJA), in its mission to promote the defense of law as the guarantor of peace and freedom, condemns the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian state in clear violation of international law and the war of occupation resulting therefrom. It calls upon the Moscow government to immediately cease its unjust aggression.

2) We join the Secretary General of the United Nations in its request for a world of dignity and equality for all. The WJA condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin’s misguided use of force to invade Ukraine in violation of the Rule of Law.

3) The WJA calls for full respect for human rights, and the humanitarian protection of civilians. Currently, there are thousands of civilian victims of this conflict and countless families and individuals whose daily lives, honor and property have been destroyed. We are particularly concerned about the extraordinary situation facing millions of people who have been forced to flee Ukraine to seek refuge in neighboring countries.

4) This very serious situation, apart from its tragic immediate consequences for Ukraine, poses a challenge that threatens peace and the rule of law throughout the world. The WJA appeals to the international community to intervene, in order to obtain an immediate de-escalation of the conflict and an effective protection of the already severely affected civilian population. We endorse the statement issued in this regard by the United Nations General Assembly by an overwhelming majority of its members.

5) This crisis, apart from its immediate, tragic consequences for Ukraine, also poses a significant challenge that threatens peace and the Rule of Law throughout the world. The WJA appeals to the international community to intervene to obtain an immediate de-escalation of the conflict and effective protections for the severely affected civilian population. We strongly endorse the statement issued by the United Nations General Assembly by an overwhelming majority of its members.

6) The WJA reiterates its position that only by adhering to national and international laws, can peace be achieved and provides its unconditional support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people. As a consultative body with special status with the United Nations, the WJA also subscribes to, and supports the initiatives being carried out by the UN to resolve the situation in Ukraine and in defense of the rights of the people affected by the conflict.
